Spotting Severe Weather Damage To Your Roof

Storm

The last thing a homeowner wishes to see after inclement weather is damage to a roof. With the roof of your house having such a significant job of protecting your home and valuables, even the slightest damage can result in the need for major repairs if not attended to properly.

What can damage my roof?

While roofing materials are designed to withstand damage from the elements, they do wear down over time. Wind, hail, rain, and flying debris can all cause significant damage to your roof and your home; inspecting your roof after a storm can mean the difference between a minor repair and the need for total replacement, which is much more costly.

How do I know if my roof has been damaged?

If you have severe weather in the area you live in, you have likely sustained some measure of roof damage. Look for these signs and indicators that repairs will need to be scheduled:

  • Leaking in the interior of your home--Leaks result when the outer layers of your roof have been compromised; cracks and gaps in your roof lead to more severe issues if water and debris are allowed to permeate inner layers. This leads to damage both outside and inside; looking for compromised areas on the outer layers of your roof after storms or heavy winds will ensure that no additional damage is done.

  • Gaps in your roof--an opening in your roof is a serious sign that considerable damage has been done. They not only allow water and debris to enter your home, but they are an open door for pests and critters to get inside as well. Inspect your roof and ceilings regularly to ensure that everything is staying tight and secure.

  • Missing tiles or shingles--Weather that is particularly severe could cost you missing tiles or shingles. Your roof is in a particularly vulnerable position with missing materials, as this is a direct gateway for water and other storm debris to enter your home. Making these repairs as soon as possible helps to protect your roof and the interior of your home from additional damage.

  • Chipped or buckling materials--Shingles and tiles can chip and buckle due to fluctuations in temperature, causing gaps in your roofline. This damage is an open door to the elements as well; chipped and buckling materials can also loosen in high winds and subsequent severe weather, causing more significant damage. Repair and replacement should be scheduled as soon as possible to avoid additional issues.

  • Cracking--Even the smallest crack in a tile or shingle can cause damage if it goes unchecked; cracks widen and become open vessels for moisture and debris to seep through. Seal up those cracks as soon as possible upon noticing them, and you’ll keep the interior of your home clean and dry.

  • Missing granules--Next time you have the chance, inspect your shingle roof for signs of missing or washed-out granules. The layers of granule protection are designed to repel water and moisture away from your home; if these are missing or washed out, it can leave you susceptible to additional leakage and deterioration.

  • Cracked flashings and boots--Areas of your roof that require flashings and boots should be regularly inspected for signs of wear and tear; if these become loose or cracked, water can enter your home via these ports. Ensure that seals are in place and there is little opportunity for moisture to seep in.

  • Mold--Your roof is a prime breeding ground for mold, as it absorbs heat and moisture, trapping them in areas ripe for optimal growth. Over time, improper ventilation and the presence of mold can lead to dangerous health issues for some; be on the lookout for mold growth in attics, eaves, and in the ceilings of your home, as it could have dire consequences.
