What Is The Best Way To Avoid Roofing Problems?

Person Making A Roof Repair

At Len’s we know your roof is a very important part of your home, and it should be treated as such. None of us want the unfortunate situation to awaken early one morning to the sound of rain pattering on our roof AND inside of our home. Too often, a roof is neglected until there are signs of leakage and water damage inside the home, and at that point, a roof has to be replaced entirely. To preserve and protect the value of your home and all of your dry belongings, it is necessary to take some maintenance steps to avoid roofing problems.

Here are some simple things you can do to prevent unpleasant roofing failures:

Get regular roof inspections.

Your roof should be checked at least annually for signs of wear and tear. In addition, a roof should be inspected for damage every time there is a significant weather event that may have compromised its strength. While you may feel comfortable doing some of the inspecting yourself, it is always a good idea to consult a roofing professional to determine the extent of damage and what course of action should be taken to repair or replace.

Replace problem tiles or shingles.

If damage is determined to be minor, making small repairs such as replacing problem tiles or shingles could protect the integrity of your roof and even extend its life. Shingles protect the waterproof layer of your roof; through exposure to the sun and other elements of nature, this protective barrier is broken down over time. Regularly inspect and replace any broken or missing shingles and tiles promptly to prevent further damage. At Len’s Roofing, there are no repairs that are too small.

Check seals around protrusions.

Every roof has pipes or vents coming from inside the home and extending beyond your roofline. Skylights, chimneys, and gas fireplace vents are also common areas on a roof that need a little extra protection. Check to make sure that all of these protrusions are correctly sealed, and that there are no areas that might be compromised enough to allow moisture leakage into your home. If you see broken or missing seals, repair and replace at once.

Regularly maintain ridges and valleys.

No roofline is completely devoid of ridges and valleys; these areas are prone to the buildup of debris and other moisture. Be mindful of these areas, and work to remove debris from them that might cause excess moisture buildup. Make sure that any uneven roofline has shingles or tiles that overlap properly, and that there are no gaps that compromise the integrity of your roof.

Keep debris off your roof.

After a storm or a windy day, it is common to see leaves, branches, and other debris on your roof. Do not allow these to remain up there indefinitely, as they also cause an excess buildup of moisture that can cause your roof to rot.

Check out the attic.

If there is moisture of any kind in your attic, trouble is afoot. Signs such as wet or moldy insulation, condensation on the inside of the roofline, and a musty smell in the air all indicate that your roof should be inspected for areas of damage. Time to repair or replace!
